Facebook is a social networking website and app created by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. By 2006, anyone older than 13 years old with a valid email address could join the site. Today it is the largest and most used social media site and has more than 1 billion users around the world. With the ability to play games, advertise a good or service, add and follow friends, and like, comment and share posts, it has opened new opportunities for businesses, marketing and communication.
However, with great power comes great responsibility, and Facebook is no exception. Facebook also has the most cyberbullying out of all other social media sites and apps available. Cyberbullying - also known as 'behind-the-scenes bullying - involves a bully transmitting damaging words or images through an electronic medium. Flaming, harassing, outing, excluding, impersonating and stalking are some of the many types of cyberbullying, and statistics show that nearly 43% of children have been bullied online, and that 1 in 4 have had it happen more than once. |
